Dear Cardinal Families,
Thanks to everyone who came out for a Cardinal Christmas. What a fun event, and the first in our new refectory. We hope that the sneak peak got everyone really excited about all the incredible things to come with our move to the new campus next year.
Our 6th graders did an incredible job with the annual Manhattan Mall service project. Be sure to check out our social media to watch a video of this special event.
Next week is going to fly by. We will count down to Christmas with a festive Spirit Week. Dress up days will be as follows (flyer below goes into more detail):
- Monday - Favorite Christmas Character
- Tuesday - Cozy Christmas (PJs)
- Wednesday - Christmas socks (with Mass uniform)
- Thursday - Christmas cheer with jeans
- Friday - Mass Uniform for Advent Program
Christmas parties will begin at 2:00pm on Thursday. Thanks to all those parents who coordinate and contribute to make the classroom holiday parties fun for our students.
Friday is our Advent Program. Here's what you need to know:
- Program begins at 10:0am
- There will be a parish mass being celebrated on Friday from 7:00-7:30 and from 8:15-8:45. Please be respectful of our parish masses and of our parishioners if you are planning on arriving early to reserve your seat for the program.
- Please do not bring any food or drink into the church.
- Please take your programs with you when you exit the church so that it will be left beautiful for the next worship service.
Friday is also a 60% day. Please do not send your child’s backpack to school this day. Parents may check their students out in their classrooms immediately following the program. There will be no carpool. All students must be checked out by 11:30am. Lunch will not be served.
Next week is exam week at St. Joe so our bus route will change accordingly. Please be sure to check the StR app or read the flyer below for details.
Lastly, Fr. Joe asked that we share a message from him about eligibility for the Parish Subsidy. If you use the parish subsidy, please be sure to scroll to the bottom of this email to read.
It's truly a great day to be a Cardinal.

A message from Fr. Joe:
The tradition of St. Richard Elementary School continues into the next school year as we begin in our “new” location. This opportunity comes with a cost and I am grateful for the assistance of Mr. Gerald Beard and our capable staff in getting the building ready for our students and families.
The privilege of being a Cardinal family has a cost as well. As you are aware, a Catholic education is expensive but St. Richard does well to keep the tuition costs affordable as well as giving you the best for your child for the money. Those of you who are members of St. Richard are also eligible for the parish subsidy. In the past, the reception of the subsidy has been seen as the “Catholic discount”. There is no “discount” but rather the parish makes an investment in you and you children. In simple terms, money that is put in a basket by parishioners on Sunday goes to you. It is my fiduciary obligation to honor the offertory of the people to makes sure the finances are used fairly and justly. This is especially true for our parents in Catholic Schools.
To be eligible for the subsidy:
You must be a registered member of St. Richard (18 months or more). Your registration must be updated if you are still listed as a child under your parents’ name. Grandparents who are not legal guardians are not considered to be parents or eligible for the subsidy.
You must contribute to the support of the Parish through regular use of the envelope system or online giving. Contributions to charities outside of the parish operating expenses do not count as support to the parish. Some people tithe 10% of their income to the parish which is generous. If you are not able to make that commitment, consider 10% of the subsidy you are requesting at least. If you are unable to do that, then you may do so through identifiable service to the parish and/or school.
You must be a practicing Catholic and be responsible to the obligations of the Faith attending Mass on Sundays and Holy Days.
Remember, the money you are asking for in subsidy does not come from a grant or outside source. It is from people who give to St. Richard in good faith. The parish has no obligation to subsidize you or your family. In the current moment, the parish has taken great financial risk in supporting the school. One of the ways that the school can recover from debt is through tuition. That obligation is ultimately up to you and not the parish to fulfill.
